Ordering Jewellery
It is
important to measure the size of your piercing:-
- Find the
Gauge of Jewellery:
(Gauge means the thickness of the wire used to make the bar or
ring)
Navel
should always be 1.6mm unless enlarged
Nipple
usually 1.6mm but may be 1.2mm
Eyebrow
& Above Neck
usually 1.2mm but may be 1.6mm
Tongue
should always be 1.6mm unless enlarged
For more
information on jewellery gauge, size, enlarging, reducing etc.
see our Specialist Section
- Measure
the distance of your piercing:
Whilst jewel is still in place, measure the distance between
the piercing holes.
Measure the nearest distance:
| 1.
Nipple |
 |
| 2.
Navel |
 |
- If you have previously removed your
jewellery and then re-inserted it without problem, then your
jewellery is probably the correct size and a similar size should
be ordered.
If, however your jewellery feels tight, is difficult to
re-insert, or you would just like it more relaxed try a
slightly larger internal diameter.

GAUGE
ABOVE the NECK - Most piercings above the
neck are now performed with 1.2mm gauge jewellery. Tongue is an
exception always pierced with 1.6mm gauge.
Barbells, Ear Rims, Nose, Tragus, Septum and other cartilage
piercings may also be performed using 1.6mm gauge jewellery.
Here at Specialist Piercing we prefer to perform above the neck
piercing with 1.2mm gauge jewellery whenever possible. By using the
smaller needles this causes far less trauma at and around the
piercing site. When healed 1.2mm gauge is easily enlarged to 1.6mm and conversely
it takes time to reduce 1.6mm gauge to 1.2mm. Also the
smallest attachments, balls etc. only fit into 1.2mm jewellery.
TORSO - Nipples are normally pierced
using 1.6mm gauge. however, here at Specialist Piercing we advise
people with particularly small nipples to have 1.2mm gauge
jewellery (as above)
Skin 1.2mm or 1.6mm depending on skin type.
Navel - always pierced with 1.6mm
Genital
Female 1.2mm or 1.6mm can be enlarged.
Male P.A. 2.4 can be enlarged.
Male Other some can be done with 1.6mm
GAUGE ENLARGING
All piercing (when healed) can be enlarged, however, we at
Specialist Piercing advise that enlarging procedure should be
carried out by a professional body piercing technician using
sterilized equipment.
Male Prince Albert (P.A.) should be a
minimum of 2.4 gauge
but can be increased by the following stages:-
2.4 - 3.2 - 4- 5 - 6- 8 etc.
At least one month should be given
between enlargements and should always be carried out using
sterile enlarging instruments by a professional piercer.
Always seek advice.
Specialist Piercing give free advice. You're welcome to
call.

GAUGE REDUCTION
Most commonly piercings are reduced for
two reasons. Labret curved eyebrow bars etc. which are fitted with
screw on balls. Obviously smaller balls can be fitted onto smaller
bars. 1.6 gauge Labrets have a minimum ball size of 4mm dia.
whereas 1.2 gauge can take a 3mm dia. ball.
Nose wires are commonly of 1.2 gauge or less. Always use good
quality jewellery in your piercings and only change jewellery when the
piercing has healed satisfactorily and later than the minimum
healing time.
Male Prince Albert (P.A.) reduction is the opposite to
enlargement and again at least one month interval between stages.
Minimum gauge should be 2.4mm.
